Three Tips to Immersing Yourself in Local Culture While Traveling

Timothy “Tim” Maleck, a certified public accountant with the state of New York, works as a financial associate for a New York-based asset management firm. His work responsibilities include preparing financial statements and providing financial analysis for deal team requests. Outside of his professional life, Tim Maleck is fond of traveling.

One way to make lasting memories while traveling is to immerse yourself in the destination's culture. Listed below are three tips that will help you better immerse yourself on your next trip.

1. While you do not need to spend months learning French for a two-week trip to France, learning a few useful phrases in the local language will help you immerse yourself in your destination's culture. Also, doing so will allow you to engage more with the locals so that you can avoid playing the “point and pantomime” game.

2. Reading up on the local history of a destination can enrich your experience and provide greater context in regards to your destination’s customs and culture.

3. When planning your trip, avoid overplanning to where you don't have a chance to fully explore and get to know more about where you are. For example, you will likely form a stronger connection with Japan if you spend a week in Tokyo instead of trying to see multiple cities within that time frame.
