A New York team will join the league for the 2019 season, while a team was recently granted to Washington, DC, for no later than the start of the 2020 season. Former US Eagles fullback Paul Sheehy and businessman Chris Dunlavey led efforts to secure the MLR expansion franchise in the nation's capital, regarded as one of the country's largest rugby markets. The ownership group generated excitement for the new team with an exhibition match played between South Africa and Wales at Washington's RFK Stadium on June 2.
